Types of Cable Splitters
When it comes to choosing a cable splitter, you should make sure that you are choosing the right type for your use. First, there are two types available. These include the active cable modem and the passive cable modem splitters. The active modem versions are the ones that require a power supply to function. They require the power supply in order to gain some of the signal strength which is lost in the process of splitting a signal. These are most suitable in case a signal is being divided into five or more components as there would be substantial signal loss in the process.
The second type are the passive cable splitters. These do not require power to function and are self sustaining. They are very basic and only serve the purpose of dividing a signal. The quality of the signals suffers as they don't try to regain any of the lost signals. In these two categories, there are many types which vary by the number of ports that they have and the devices to which they are connected.
The first type is VGA cable splitters which are used to split VGA signals. Then there are the HDMI versions. HDMI models are used to split the signals of a High Definition Multimedia Interface like a HD TV or an LCD. Input to high visual quality displays such as flat panel computer displays and digital projectors can be split by using a dvi cable splitter.
For local area connections and other internet connections, an Ethernet cable divider can be used so that internet can be used on more than one computer. Other types include the av cable, component cable, RCA audio, headphone jack, monster cable and rf splitters. The av cable splitter is used to split a simple audio video input of any component such as gaming consoles and VCRs.
The headphone jack versions allow two or more headphones to be connected to the same device such as a PC or a stereo system. The RCA ones are similar to av models and it used to split audio and video signals at the same time. Monster versions are used to split strong signals and to ensure minimum signal loss. An rf versions is used to split an input comprising radio frequencies.
